The short answer, and this month's count
The 173.33 figure is a yearly average of working hours: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, divided by 12 months. No single month has exactly that many. Here is the count for the month you are in, worked out from your device's date:
- Weekdays (Monday to Friday)
- 22
- Federal holidays on a weekday
- Columbus Day (Oct 12)
- Hours if you work every weekday
- 176
- Left after today, Oct 18, 2026
- 10 weekdays (80 work hours)

40 hours a week is 8 hours a day over five days. Holidays are the observed federal days off; a holiday on a Saturday moves to Friday, one on a Sunday to Monday.
Federal holidays are the days off for federal employees. Private employers choose their own holidays, and many stay open on days such as Columbus Day and Veterans Day, so the true count for most jobs sits between the two settings. State holidays are not included. Holiday dates follow the federal holiday schedule published by OPM, the US Office of Personnel Management.
Weekdays are every Monday to Friday. Business days and work days usually mean weekdays minus holidays, and your own work days also leave out the days you take off.
Average work hours per month by weekly hours
| Hours a week | Hours a day (5 days) | Average per month | Per year (52 weeks) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 8 | 173.33 | 2,080 |
| 37.5 | 7.5 | 162.5 | 1,950 |
| 35 | 7 | 151.67 | 1,820 |
| 32 | 6.4 | 138.67 | 1,664 |
| 30 | 6 | 130 | 1,560 |
| 20 | 4 | 86.67 | 1,040 |
Which number to use
Use the average when you turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate, because pay is spread evenly over the year. The same 2,080 hours is the usual full-time equivalent (FTE) year, and one biweekly pay period at 40 hours a week is 80 hours. A salary of $4,000.00 a month at 40 hours a week is $4,000.00 ÷ 173.33 = $23.08 an hour.
Use the real month when the hours themselves matter: a timesheet, a client bill, a monthly budget for a part-time worker, or how much work a team can take on. In 2026 the gap between the busiest and the quietest month is 24 hours at 40 hours a week, which is 3 full working days.
Work out your own month
- Count the weekdays in the month, or read them from the table above.
- Take away the holidays your employer actually gives you, not the federal list.
- Take away any paid time off (PTO) you will use, such as vacation or sick days.
- Multiply the days left by the hours you work in a day.
Example: November 2026 has 21 weekdays. At a company that closes for Thanksgiving and the Friday after it, with one vacation day booked, that is 21 − 2 − 1 = 18 days, and 18 × 8 = 144 hours. The federal count for the same month is 152 hours, because federal employees get Veterans Day off as well but work the Friday after Thanksgiving.
If you work fewer than five days, multiply your days per week by your weeks instead. A month has 21.67 weekdays on average, or about 4.33 weeks.
Converting hours to working days
Divide the hours by the length of your working day, not by 24. Dividing by 24 gives calendar days, which is the right answer only for something that runs around the clock.
| Hours | 8-hour days | 7.5-hour days | Calendar days (24 h) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 5 days | 5 days 2.5 h | 1.67 |
| 80 | 10 days | 10 days 5 h | 3.33 |
| 160 | 20 days | 21 days 2.5 h | 6.67 |
| 200 | 25 days | 26 days 5 h | 8.33 |
| 1,250 | 156 days 2 h | 166 days 5 h | 52.08 |
In a spreadsheet, =A1/8 gives the working days as a decimal. 45 hours is 5.63 days, or 5 days and 5 hours. To turn working days into a finish date on the calendar, use the business days option in the Days From Today Calculator.
How many hours are in a month on the calendar
If you meant every hour on the clock, not work hours, multiply the days in the month by 24. The average is 730 hours (8,760 hours in a year divided by 12), or 730.5 when leap years are averaged in.
| Month length | Months | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| 31 days | January, March, May, July, August, October, December | 744 |
| 30 days | April, June, September, November | 720 |
| 29 days | February in a leap year (next: 2028) | 696 |
| 28 days | February in other years | 672 |
Some lists give 744 hours for a leap-year February. That is the figure for a 31-day month; February 2028 has 696.
