These lengths are the same every year. The only month that changes is February. A year has 365 days, or 366 in a leap year, so the average month is about 30.4 days long.

Every month of 2026 and 2027

The number of days never changes, but the weekdays do, because each month starts on a different day of the week each year. In 2026, May has 31 days, starts on a Friday and holds 21 weekdays. The current month is highlighted.

February and leap years

February has 29 days in a leap year and 28 in every other year. A leap year is any year that divides by 4, except century years, which must also divide by 400.

The next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036 and 2040. The extra day keeps the calendar in step with the seasons, since the Earth takes about 365¼ days to go around the Sun. Every date from March 1 onward has a day number one higher in a leap year.

How to remember the days in each month

The knuckle trick

Make two fists side by side. Count the months across the knuckles and the dips between them, starting with January on the first knuckle. Every month on a knuckle has 31 days. Every month in a dip has 30, apart from February. July lands on the last knuckle of the first fist and August on the first knuckle of the second, which is why they both have 31.

The rhyme

Thirty days has September,
April, June and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Except February alone,

Why one month is not the same as 30 days

Because months run from 28 to 31 days, "in one month" and "in 30 days" often land on different dates. From Sunday, January 31, 2027, one month later is Sunday, February 28, 2027, the last day of February, while 30 days later is Tuesday, March 2, 2027. From Mar 15, 2027, one month is Apr 15, 2027 and 30 days is Apr 14, 2027.

When a month later has no matching day, such as February 31, the date moves back to the last day of the month.
